How to install ePave 5.1d and EFS-ABX 1.1 from downloads
If you have an EFS CD-ROM from the USPTO with the new ePave 5.1d and EFS-ABX 1.1, you can install from the CD and it is pretty straightforward.
If you do not have the CD, it is possible to install the software by means of downloads from the web site of the USPTO. This page explains how to do it.
Installing ePave 5.1d. Barring some surprise, you previously had ePave version 5.1. The instructions in the documentation for ePave 5.1d don't work. Instead, it is necessary to uninstall ePave 5.1 followed by installing epave 5.1d. The way to do this is by means of start/controlpanels/addremoveprograms where you can select ePave and uninstall it.
Now, most users of ePave 5.1 did not get any benefit from the Address Book of ePave 5.1. But if you are among the rare users who actually made use of the Address Book, then consider the following instructions which appear at page 11 of the ePave 5.1d documentation.
NOTE: If a previous version of ePAVE [version 5.1] is installed and the Address book contains many names and addresses, the user should make a back-up of the file C:\Program Files\USPTO\ePAVE\DEF\ AddressBook.csv and copy it back in the same folder once the new version of ePAVE [version 5.1d] is installed.
Anyway, once you have (optionally) backed up your ePave Address Book and uninstalled ePave 5.1, then you can install ePave 5.1d. To do this, start by downloading ePave version 5.1d. Download the file epave51d.exe to a location of your choice on your computer. Then run the file epave51d.exe and it will install ePave version 5.1d.
The next thing you should do is test it. Click on start/programfiles/uspto/epave and let it do a version check. If it says the version is current, then you have successfully installed ePave 5.1d.
Installing EFS-ABX 1.1. The next thing you will need to do is install EFS-ABX 1.1. To do this, download abx.exe to a location of your choice on your computer. Then run the file abx.exe and it will install EFS-ABX 1.1. New instructions were posted August 23, 2004 as to how to do this. See http://www.uspto.gov/ebc/efs/downloads/efsabx.htm.
The next thing you should do is test it. Click on start/programfiles/uspto/epave/abx1.1 and it should launch Microsoft Word with the ABX 1.1 plugin.
Installing EFSPDFwriter. The remaining thing you must download and install is EFSPDFwriter. New instructions were posted August 23, 2004 as to how to do this. See http://www.uspto.gov/ebc/efs/downloads/abxpdf.htm.
